Palanga is a resort town which is situated by the Baltic Sea in the northwest part of Lithuania. The town borders with the Republic of Latvia, with Kretinga and Klaipeda districts .
People started to settle in this area from the second to third century BC. In the 12th and 13th centuries Palanga was a well-known trading centre by the sea, a port on the Hansa merchants' route.
Now Palanga is a resort town with beautiful sand beaches (18 km long and in some places about 300 m wide), dunes and an unspoilt natural environment. Amber has been found here since the oldest times. A great number of amber craftsmen live here. There is a unique Amber Musuem and the Count Tiskevicius Park in Palanga.
The palace was built in 1897 by project of German architect Franc Svechten. The Tiskeviciai palace is the present Amber Museum. The museum has the world's biggest collection of amber inclusions.
The Museum is becoming famous for its traditional cultural events. For 30 summers now the terrace has been home to the night serenade concerts.
Palanga botanic park, where this museum is situated is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved parks by Eduard Rene Andre, famous French landscape architect, designed at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. It is a popular strolling place.
Birute hill - another beautiful place in the park, is located in the south west of the Amber Museum. This hill has a romantic history. It used to be a pagan sanctuary and the observatory of celestial bodies. Today it is a peaceful and quiet place, especially popular among infatuated couples. At the foot of the hill there is a Lurd initiated by earl Tiskevicius. In summertime poetry readings are held here. From the top of Birute hill you can enjoy a broad sea panorama.
Basanavicius street and the sea bridge are the most popular strolling places in Palanga. The street of J. Basanavicius is the basic street, which leads to the sea bridge. It is full of cafes and entertainment, many people and loud music till the midnight, lots of attractions and souvenirs, etc. Evening strolls to see the sunset is old and popular tradition among vacationers.
Palanga has three sanatoriums and more than 100 holiday houses, guesthouses and hotels.
